I decided to apply these two theories to some learning I have been undertaking in my spare time. I have been learning to crochet, in particular to be able to make octopuses for premature babies which are donated to Octopus for a Preemie UK. In looking at these theories there I can see how elements of both have been included in the way this training has worked so far, but here I shall look at how the learning would look when related separately to each individual theory.

Cognitivism

Step-by-step learning process

1.

Learning takes place through a combination of patterns, videos, tutorials, feedback, books, etc

2.

I have learnt basic stitches previously, and now need to combine new information with this to move the skills forward and make the octopuses, such as changing tension, the difference between yarn under and yarn over, the different yarns and hook size combinations, and much more.

3.

Need to make combinations between all these separate techniques and skills to ensure the octopuses meet the tight standards.

4.

The learning is broken down into chunks, particularly through separate videos where you can watch one at a time, related to the stage you are up to, for example, casting on, changing yarn, the tentacles, closing, embroidering the face. As you succeed in each area, the outcome is more successful and successful completion of each stage often helps the next.

Techniques require a lot of memory and attention, it is not merely responding to a stimulus. They need to put the techniques into practice and learn from trial and error as to what is going to work for their technique.

' People are not “programmed animals" that merely respond to environmental stimuli; people are rational beings that require active participation in order to learn'

Cognitivism. (2017, February 04).

6.

There is a large amount of social cognitivism in that a lot of learning takes place too including:

  • Uploading images of your work to the facebook page for feedback and advice, and the final pieces are also sent off to moderators to check they have met the strict requirements before being sent to babies, from which feedback is provided as to how to make future makes pass.

  • They also often hold workshops in each area where you can go to learn or advance your skills.

  • Constantly monitor and adjust your behaviour according to feedback

  • Learners believe they are capable and this is why they have undertaken the voluntary activity in the first place.

  • There is a sense of mastery when one of your makes passes the checks.

'Learning is not purely a solitary, internal matter. It takes places interpersonally' (Albert Bandura)

7.

Connectivism

Though a practical skill, a lot of learning takes place online through the facebook page, the charity's website, youtube videos and online feedback.

1.

There are strong connections within the charity. Everyone has their own regional team and coordinator, as well as being involved in the nationwide/international network. You are guided through the process by these moderators working as mentors.

' In our digital society, the connections and connectiveness within networks lead to learning.' Connectivism. (n.d.)

3.

There needs to be some ability to distinguish between relevant and non-relevant feedback or advice, as sometimes guidance given in not from the most accurate sources. Individuals also need to be able to distinguish between UK and USA guidance as the stitches differ.

4.

The capacity for the skills to be learnt is significantly larger than what is currently known. The majority are learning from mentors which a much higher skill base and level of experience to themselves.

5.

There are every changing regulations and adaptations to the accepted material list. Accuracy and up-to-date knowledge is crucial for the safety of the comforters being made.
